This type of third world treatment to India has to stop: Sports Ministry on Aman Dahiya’s snub | Tennis News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The sports ministry on Wednesday reacted sharply to the snub meted out to young Indian tennis player Aman Dahiya, who had made the cut for the Australian Open junior championships qualifying but was denied entry by the organisers as he was yet to be vaccinated for Covid-19.
“This type of third world treatment given to India has to stop,” responded the ministry sources. “The big blame is to go to Australian Open organisers,” the sources added.
The ministry’s reaction came after World No.1 Novak Djokovic received a medical exemption for Covid-19 vaccination from the Australian Open authorities, while Dahiya, 17, was refused entry by the organisers and the Victoria state government. India has opened up vaccination drives for teenagers only this week. “This is unacceptable,” the source said.
As reported by TOI, Dahiya looked at options to get vaccinated in other countries, but logistics and funding issues proved to be stumbling blocks.
World No. 78 Dahiya’s coach Jignesh Rawal, exclusively speaking to TOI on Tuesday, had hit out at the alleged double standards of the Australian Open organisers and the Victoria state government.
“It (rules) shouldn’t be different. This is why players like Nick Kyrgios have been complaining about Roger (Federer) and Rafa (Nadal) getting preferential treatment,” Rawal said. “The circumstances don’t matter. The rule is if you don’t have two vaccine doses, you cannot enter. (So) Why did they allow Djokovic? Djokovic can have special treatment on the court (like center court priority), but the entry point has to be the same. In this case, it is directly connected with a government law. But Aman can be collateral damage, and Djokovic cannot be,” he added.
