Thor Love and Thunder becomes fifth Marvel film to earn ₹100 crore in India, all set to cross $700 million globally

Marvel’s latest superhero film Thor Love and Thunder has crossed some major landmarks at the box office both in India and globally. The Chris Hemsworth-starrer has become the fifth Marvel film to earn more than 100 crore at the Indian box office. Globally, it is all set to cross $700 million and become the highest-grossing Thor film ever, displacing its predecessor Thor Ragnarok. According to a release by Marvel Studios, the film’s producers, Thor Love and Thunder has become the second Hollywood film after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to cross Rs100 crore this year. Both films are part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Other Marvel films to have earned over 100 crore in India are Avengers Infinity War, Avengers Endgame, and Spider-Man No Way Home.

In the West, too, the film has continued its strong run. According to a Forbes report, the fourth Thor film earned $7.6 million in its fifth weekend in the North American market, taking its 31-day haul in the region to $316.1 million. Its global earnings in this period are $698.9 million, with analysts predicting it to cross $700 million on Tuesday.

Thor Ragnarok has been the most successful Thor film ever with lifetime earnings of $854 million. However, Love and Thunder did not release in Russia and China unlike its predecessor, and if those figures are adjusted, Ragnaork’s earnings are $712 million, which Love and Thunder is expected to surpass in a week. The overall figure may still be out of its reach but trade experts say the film is a massive success, considering the limitations of the pandemic.

Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor Love and Thunder released in theatres on July 7 in India and July 8 globally. The film, part of MCU’s Phase 4, also stars Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, and Christian Bale in his MCU debut as the film’s villain.
