Those trained under govt’s flagship skills programme get 15-19% higher wages: Minister

Candidates trained and certified under the government’s flagship skills programme get 15-19% higher wages than those without any formal certification, the skills development ministry said.

“The third-party evaluation report of Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 2.0 has found that the mean monthly income of individuals trained and certified under PMKVY 2.0 – short term training (STT) was 15% higher when compared to a comparison group of individuals who have not participated in PMKVY,” the skills development minister said in response to a question in Lok Sabha on Monday.

“Further, the average monthly income of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)-certified individuals was found to be 19% higher than that of a comparison group of non-RPL certified individuals,” it added.

As per skills development ministry’s response, the third party evaluation report conducted on the apprenticeship scheme shows 74% apprentices have obtained wage employment after completing Apprenticeship.

Responding to a separate question on non-performing training centres, the skills development minister said so far, 306 training centres (TCs) have been suspended across the different locations.

Further, the minister said so far 70,823 migrant workers have been trained under the Garib Kalyan Rozgar Abhiyan (GKRA). “This program is being implemented across 119 districts of 6 states namely Assam, Bihar, Odisha, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh,” the minister said in response to a separate question in Lok Sabha.

So far, a total of 1.40 core candidates have been trained under various programmes of the skill development ministry in the last three years since 2018-19. Of these, 83,43,148 candidates have been trained under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) 1.0 and 2.0, 9,42,411 have been trained under the Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS), 7,38,074 candidates under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) and 39,75,924 candidates under the Craftsman Training Scheme through industrial training institutes (ITIs).
