Threads: Facebook breaks this ChatGPT record with its new app, Threads – Times of India

Move over ChatGPT, we have a new claimant for the fastest 100 million downloads. It is Facebook parent Meta Platforms’ Twitter rival Threads. The all-new Threads crossed 100 million sign-ups within five days of launch. The same was announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a post on Threads. With this, Thread dethrones ChatGPT as the fastest-growing online platform to hit the milestone. Threads has been setting records for user growth since its launch on July 4th last week. The app’s ride to 100 million users was much speedier than that of Microsoft-backed OpenAI-owned ChatGPT, which became the fastest-growing consumer app in history in January. OpenAI’s chatbot passed the 100 million mark two months after its launch.
“That’s mostly organic demand, and we haven’t even turned on many promotions yet,” Zuckerberg said in a Threads post announcing the milestone.
With celebrities, politicians and other newsmakers joining the platform that is seen by analysts as the first serious threat to the Elon Musk-owned microblogging app.
What Zuckerberg said
“Threads reached 100 million sign ups over the weekend. That’s mostly organic demand and we haven’t even turned on many promotions yet. Can’t believe it’s only been 5 days!” said Zuckerberg.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri also posted about it. “100 million people signed up for Threads in five days. I’m not sure I can wrap my mind around that fact. It’s insane; I can’t make sense of it. The team has been busting their ass, but we know this is a race to the starting line. They say “make it work, make it great, make it grow.” Well, we certainly did things out of order, but I promise we will make this thing great,” he wrote.
Not aiming to replace Twitter
Earlier Mosseri also insisted that with Threads, the company is not trying to replace Twitter. “The goal isn’t to replace Twitter. The goal is to create a public square for communities on Instagram that never really embraced Twitter and for communities on Twitter (and other platforms) that are interested in a less angry place for conversations, but not all of Twitter. Politics and hard news are inevitably going to show up on Threads – they have on Instagram as well to some extent – but we’re not going to do anything to encourage those verticals,” he wrote.
