Vaccine-shy Murali Vijay stays away from cricket | Cricket News – Times of India

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu have started their season with the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign earlier this month but their star opener Murali Vijay has stayed away from it.
It is understood that Vijay is not ready to take the Covid-19 vaccine. With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) standard operating procedures (SOP) asking state cricket associations to implement strict Covid-19 protocols, sources said Vijay doesn’t want to be a part of the bubble life either.
“It is his personal decision. He is hesitant to take the vaccine. The BCCI SOPs say that a player needs to be inside the bubble for a week before a tournament starts and then as long as he is with the team. But Vijay is not too keen on it. So the Tamil Nadu selectors haven’t considered him for selection,” a source in the know of things told TOI.
When TOI tried to contact Vijay to get a clarity on his stand, the calls went unanswered.
The 37-year-old Vijay, who was a crucial player for the Indian team, compiling 3982 Test runs, had last played competitive cricket for Chennai Super Kings in 2020. Interestingly, the 2020 IPL in the UAE was the first BCCI-conducted tournament which was played under bio-bubble rules.
Since then, Vijay has made himself unavailable for selection and wrote about his decision to the Tamil Nadu selectors. He wasn’t part of this season’s IPL too. The last time Vijay played for Tamil Nadu was back in 2019 during a Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka.
It was, however, learnt that the former India opener had started training at the MA Chidambaram Stadium here earlier this year to prepare for the season. But it is understood that the Covid second wave might have affected him.
Vijay, who was part of Ruby Trichy Warriors, later pulled out of the fifth edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League and has not played in either the TNCA first division league or the VAP Trophy.
As a result, the source said, Vijay has completely fallen off the radar.
“The selectors have not even discussed about him in the selection meeting and he didn’t even make it to the Tamil Nadu list of probables picked before the domestic season. So even if he is ready to take the vaccine and wants to make a comeback, it will be a long road for him because he won’t be picked immediately. He has to prove his fitness and needs to have a few matches under his belt to be selected for Tamil Nadu again,” the source said.
