Watch: Earthquake felt at U19 World Cup as commentators describe tremors during Ireland-Zimbabwe match in Trinidad

A bizarre turn of events was captured by television cameras at the U19 World Cup as mild tremors were felt during the Plate semi-final match between Ireland and Zimbabwe at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad on Saturday. While the players carried on with the match, the commentators were able to feel the tremors as the commentary box began shaking.

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Port of Spain caused the tremors on Saturday as the screen was violently shaking from the feed from the front-on camera at the venue.

ICC commentator, Andrew Leonard, described the tremors as the commentary box began to wobble but there was no panic in his voice when the mild tremors were felt.

“We are… I believe we are having an earthquake right now. In the box. We are indeed having an earthquake. It felt like not just a train going by behind us, but the whole Queen’s Park Oval media centre rocked,” he said, adding that the tremors were felt for a period of 15-20 seconds.

The tremors shook the television cameras during the 6th over of the Zimbabwe innings. Matthew Humphreys, the Ireland spinner, continued to bowl as the play was unaffected by the earthquake.

Ireland U-19 defeated Zimbabwe by 8 wickets as the match continued without any further tremors in Port of Spain. Ireland pacer Muzamil Sherzad picked up 5 wickets to restrict Zimbabwe to 166 after which unbeaten seventies from captain Tim Tector and Jack Dickson helped Zimbabwe chase down the target in just 32 overs.
