KOLKATA: The state government on Saturday decided to postpone both the Madhyamik examinations and the Higher Secondary examinations from June. While the class X Board examinations were scheduled from June 1, HS was to be held form June 15.

After the decision of state government which was announced by chief secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay, the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education announced that the Higher Secondary Examination 2021 is postponed and will not be held in June.

“The schedule of Examination (Higher Secondary, 2021) will be announced later by giving suitable time to the students,” informed Mahua Das, President of the HS Council.

Kalyanmoy Ganguly, President of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education in a communique to the candidates also said that Madhyamik Pariksha is postponed and will not be held in June. “Further schedule of the examination will be by giving students suitable time,” said Ganguly.

Both CBSE and ICSE has however cancelled the class X Board examinations. Sources in the state education department indicated that the government is averse to the idea of promoting the students of class X to the next class considering no Test examinations could be held for the 2020-2021 batch. “If a formula is to be derived like the other boards, how do we do it in the absence of any scorecard from Test examinations?,” questioned an official. He added that taking into account the results for class IX annual examinations will not be sufficient to evaluate a student who is due to appear in the Madhyamik examinations. All Class X students were allowed to appear in the Madhyamik examinations from June 1 by the government without holding the test examinations.

“The candidates of Madhyamik examinations 2021 have been studying the same material since January 2020. Moreover, the Syllabus has truncated (this reduction has, of course, been quite judicious from the learners’ point of view). The Secondary examinations have been cancelled by the two national boards, namely CBSE and ICSE and a few state boards,” said Saugata Basu, General Secretary, West Bengal Govt. School Teachers’ Association.

He added that under the circumstances, the candidates can no longer motivate themselves to study the same texts.

“We hope and trust that the government will very soon bring out a solution which will keep up the interst of the young learners in all respects. It may be remembered in this context that the entire nation and, for that matter, the whole world is undergoing a war- like situation and we must hold patience reposing faith in the Government which has never adopted any step contrary to the interests of the learners,” Basu, pointed out.
