HIGHLIGHTS

  • Shubman Gill scored 43 runs in the 2nd ODI
  • Shubman Gill got out to Kyle Mayers in the 2nd ODI
  • India won the second ODI by 2 wickets to take a 2-0 lead in the series

Former Pakistan batter Salman Butt reckoned that Shubman Gill should learn to convert starts into substantial scores. In the first two ODIs against the West Indies at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad, the right-hander promised a whole lot with some impressive shots early in his knocks, but failed to carry on and make the starts count.

After scoring 64 in the series opener, Gill scored 43 in the second match, but got out to a rash shot off Kyle Mayers. Gill tried to play a cheeky scoop shot only to find a leading edge and give the bowler a simple caught and bowled chance.

“Shubman Gill played well, but once again threw his wicket after being set. He’s been doing that repeatedly now. While he does play very well, I think he needs to carry on and score big because he has a lot of talent.” Butt was quoted as saying.

Gill made his ODI debut way back in 2019 against New Zealand, but has only played five matches in the format since then.

Butt, in the meantime, reckoned that Team India have a powerful bench strength. The veteran reckoned that the Men in Blue are a powerful unit despite not having some of their key players for the series.

“India have a solid bench strength. They are in a developmental phase and a lot of their pool of players are continuously increasing. We can’t see much difference in the team even when several big names are absent. This is because the management is providing consistent opportunities and the players have been responding well. The communication has become very clear,” he added.

India, on Sunday, won the second ODI by two wickets and took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
