West Indies gave a little glimpse of the damage that they can do with the bat against Mahmudullah’s Bangladesh side, smashing the visitors for 193 runs in their registered 20 overs. Batting first, Brandon King and Nicholas Pooran set the base of the team, which was later picked up by Rovman Powell smashing his way through a 28-ball 61, which put the hosts in command.

Powell, well regarded for his hitting ability against pace, cleared the ropes with ease, hitting 6 sixes in his innings of 61. He turned the momentum around with a Shakib Al Hasan over, that went for 23 runs. From there it was just carnage as Bangladesh failed to keep a check on the runs.

Speaking after the game, Powell said that he wanted to target Shakib because the veteran wasn’t having a good day.

“We always sit in our batting meeting to talk about changing momentum and course of the game,” Powell said. “I think that over today from Shakib did that for us. It is very, very important to pick match-ups and bowlers. I reckoned Shakib wasn’t having the best of the days. I decided to go after him. There was five overs of pace in the back-end. The platform was already set by the captain and Brandon, who both played well before I got to the crease. It was just an opportunity for me to advance the scoring. To bat all the overs.”

Powell, who was an integral part of the Indian Premier League side Delhi Capitals, made a name for himself in India for his ability to hit the ball deep into the stands. He stated that the change of guard has allowed new talents to come through and he would try to make the most of his opportunity.

“It is a change in the guard, to be honest. Our legends Chris Gayle, [Dwayne] Bravo and [Kieron] Pollard sit back and let us youngsters come through. We have to take this opportunity to bring smiles back to the people of the Caribbean,” he said.
