Britain’s Heather Watson, on Friday, July 1, qualified for the fourth round of Wimbledon 2022 after beating Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan 7-6 (6) 6-2 on Court 1. The 30-year-old advanced to the Round of 16 of a Grand Slam in as many as 43 attempts.

Watson started her campaign at Wimbledon back in 2010 and almost defeated Serena Williams back in 2015. Watson, who is currently ranked 121st in the world, said that she never lost hopes of making it beyond the third round of a Grand Slam.

“No chance. I wouldn’t still be playing if I thought that ship had sailed. I’ve been in the third round quite a few times so I was just sort of waiting for it to happen.

“I waited long enough, I think, and did it in dramatic fashion,” Watson was quoted as saying after the match.
In the second set of her match against Juvan, Watson took a 5-0 lead, but her opponent won two back-to-back games to stay alive in the contest. However, Watson showed a lot of calmness and closed out the game.

“Those last three games were so close, she raised her game and was coming up with some great shots,” she stated.

“I didn’t really panic because I was thinking clearly and well aware that she had raised her level and I was prepared for that. I was surprisingly calm actually. I really believed that I was going to do it.”
“I’m just proud of myself for getting over the line,” Watson added.
