Wimbledon 2022: Serena-slayer Harmony Tan’s dream run on debut continues, reaches 4th round

France’s Harmony Tan continued her dream run on her Wimbledon debut as the 24-year-old player booked her place in the 4th round of a Grand Slam for the first time. Harmony defeated local star Katie Boulter 6-1, 6-1 in just 51 minutes to progress to the second week of Wimbledon 2022.

Harmony Tan was put to big test when she took on Serena Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, in the center court in the opening round. She came up with a stunning show, mixing it up wonderfully well to send the legendary American packing.

And on Saturday, Harmony proved her win against Serena was no fluke by going through to the second week.

“No I don’t believe it yet — if I sleep a little bit, tomorrow maybe I will believe it, but it’s amazing,” Harmony Tan said.

Tan, who is ranked World No. 115 in women’s singles, will face either Coco Gauff or Amanda Anisimova, for a place in the quarter-finals.

Harmony Tan conceded she was emotional after winning the first-round match against Serena Williams but she has been once again able to focus on her basics. The French player said she was elated with her near-perfect show on Saturday.

‘EMOTIONAL FIRST ROUND’

“I think I like grass, I never play on this court but I like to play with slice and volley and everything with my game so I’m really happy.

“It was really emotional for the first round against Serena and after it was just playing match by match and today was really good tennis.”

Despite partisan support from the home crowd on Court two, Boulter failed to put up any resistance against Tan’s variety and superb court coverage and the world number 118 did not help her cause by committing 21 unforced errors.

After taking on Williams on Centre Court in a late-night thriller, Tan said she was happy to be put on a smaller court.

“Because when you play a Brit on Centre Court, I think there are a lot of people for her. I like to play on a small court,” Tan said.

“I like to play the first match also because I don’t wait all day.”
