Wimbledon 2023: Jannik Sinner beats Diego Schwartzman in straight sets to book Round 3 berth

By India Today Sports Desk: No.8 seed Jannik Sinner, on Wednesday, July 5, defeated Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman in straights sets to book his berth in the Wimbledon 2023 men’s singles Round 3. Sinner won the match 7-5, 6-1, 6-2 in two hours and two minutes on Court 1.

Sinner was dominant throughout the match and it was evident from the fact that he hit 15 aces compared to his opponent’s one. He was also exceptional with his first serves, winning 81 percent of points (38 of 47) from them.

Although he made 35 unforced errors, three more than Schwartzman, he made up for it with 38 winners. Sinner said that he started finding his rhythm from the third set onwards.

“In the beginning, I thought we both were a little bit tight. After, I played a little bit better and I hit quite hard, especially in the third set. It really was a good match,” Sinner was quoted as saying after the match.

“I felt like I was serving very well in important moments. I was trying somehow to play my game. Moving him around is not easy because he’s so fast, so I tried to overpower him a little bit. He’s a good friend of mine, we play doubles together sometimes and he’s such a nice man, so it’s always tough to play against a friend,” he added.

Sinner is next set to face either Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic or France’s Quentin Halys in the third round. Last year, Sinner made his way through to the quarters at SW19, but lost to the might of Novak Djokovic, who has won four Wimbledon titles in a row since 2018.
