Wimbledon: Daniil Medvedev survives scare vs Christopher Eubanks, Carlos Alcaraz beats Holger Rune to reach semis

By Sabyasachi Chowdhury: World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz is through to his maiden Wimbledon men’s singles semi-final. The Spaniard beat Holger Rune 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinal on Centre Court in two hours and 21 minutes.

Barring the opening set where Rune threatened to dominate, Alcaraz looked pretty much flawless. Alcaraz was exceptional, both with his first and second serves, winning 79 and 71 percent of points from them.

Alcaraz hit 35 winners, nine more than his opponent and 13 unforced errors, eight fewer than Rune. He was dominating to the extent that he gave Rune only one chance to break his serves throughout the match. Alcaraz, on the other hand, earned two breaks of serve.

Alcaraz will next be up against World No.3 Daniil Medvedev, who survived a massive scare against Christopher Eubanks. Medvedev won the match 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 in two hours and 58 minutes.

MEDVEDEV SURVIVES

Medvedev had to play out of his skin to beat Eubanks, who earlier knocked out World No.5 Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets. After winning the opening set, Medvedev lost the next two sets to find himself in a hole.

The fourth set went into a tie-break where Medvedev somehow managed to edge out his opponent. Medvedev put his A-game forward in the fifth set where he converted all three of his break point chances.

Medvedev hit 52 winners, 22 winners less than Eubanks. But what made the difference between the two players is the amount of unforced errors. While Medvedev hit only 13 of them, Eubanks was undone by 55.

In the other men’s singles semis, Novak Djokovic will be up against World No.8 Jannik Sinner. Earlier on Wednesday, Ons Jabeur and Aryna Sabalenka also made their way through to the semis by beating Madison Keys and Elena Rybakina respectively.
