NEW DELHI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) is all set to tweak the points system for the next cycle of World Test Championship (WTC) which starts with India’s five-Test series in England in August.
The points system has been under the scanner since the inaugural WTC was launched in 2019. “There will be some tweaks to the points system in the next cycle. There were five-Test series and there were countries whose resources and interest in Test cricket warranted for more like two-Test series. The points system was such that the two-match series was worth the same as a five-match series. It meant everyone was playing for the same number of points in total,” Geoff Allardice, acting CEO of ICC, responded to TOI’s query during an interaction with select group of journalists on Monday.
The Covid-19 pandemic forced ICC to change the points system midway through the cycle. It moved to a percentage-per-win system. The ICC now feels that’s a fair way to allocate points. “We will stick with the percentage of points. We can put a standardized number of points per Test match. So, it doesn’t matter if it is in a two-Test series or a five-Test series. Every team will be judged on the percentage of the points in wins and not on total,” Allardice said.
‘Looking at certainty to finalise venue for T20 WC’
As the June 28 deadline for the Indian cricket board (BCCI) to announce the venues to host the T20 World Cup in Oct-Nov draws closer, the ICC is looking at absolute certainty in terms of the Covid situation. UAE has been kept as a backup venue for the tournament.
“Our view is to deliver the full event in the window available. There’s extra layer of complexity with covid travel restrictions. What we are looking for is certainty where the event is going to be staged so that we can start developing match schedule and plans. We are in daily discussions with BCCI on budget and schedule,” Allardice said.
