Fill Up Buttercup is disrupting big-box retailers by transforming the way customers buy personal and household products into a trustworthy, welcoming, wellness-focused, and affordable shopping experience. An increase in consumer savviness has driven the expectation of transparency in product ingredients, sustainable alternatives, and plastic-free swaps. Owner of Fill Up Buttercup, Jamie Lake, is meeting those expectations with the launch of five new products, all consciously crafted in California.

Jamie’s journey began while researching alternative healing modalities in hopes to help her father with his autoimmune disease, Multiple Sclerosis. Jamie stumbled upon research correlating common ingredients used in household products to various illnesses, allergies, and an increase in toxic body burden. This led her to analyze product labels and investigate what exactly was inside the products her family was using on their body and in their home. As she slowly transitioned to nontoxic products she noticed a slight tremor she learned to live with subsided.

A passion to live a less toxic lifestyle and decrease her environmental footprint became a full-time job upon realizing how unregulated commercial products are. “The lack of FTC regulation results in brands ‘greenwashing’ consumers by falsely using advertising marketing terms like natural, organic, eco friendly, and carbon neutral. On top of that, the lack of FDA regulation allows common household brands to utilize known endocrine-disrupting ingredients like parabens and fragrances. This puts the burden on consumers to do extensive research to determine what is safe for them; and who has time for that?” Jamie says.

After years of deciphering ingredient lists and jumping through hoops to use less plastic around the home, Jamie decided it was time to create a go-to hub for her community. Originally selling just a few nontoxic, zero-waste products out of a small yoga studio, Jamie quickly expanded to her own store in Costa Mesa in early 2021. In less than six months of opening her one-stop shop for home and body products, she was already expanding into the space next door.

Kristina Guccione, Jamie’s business partner, is passionate about delivering a welcoming and warm experience. “The shop has become more than spreading awareness to the community about toxic products and plastic pollution. It’s a place to connect, share, and be inspired,” says Kristina. Which explains the impressive customer return rates. Unlike most refill shops, Jamie and Kristina stock the shelves with lots of product options to satisfy different customer needs. Still, they found a need for an even better, more affordable product, which inspired the Fill Up Buttercup line. “It is important to us to create locally with people we trust to deliver an exceptional product and to lower our carbon footprint. You will never see parabens, fragrances, phthalates, or plastic wrap in our products,” says Jamie.

Fill Up Buttercup’s hand soap, dish soap, face moisturizer, face wash, and micellar water are now available online and in-store at their Costa Mesa location. Bring your own bottle or choose a bottle to purchase there!
