Zoom app will stop working on these laptops, here’s why – Times of India

Video conferencing platform Zoom became one of the most used and talked about apps in the last two years. With the coronavirus pandemic striking hard worldwide, the need for video calls rose phenomenally and with the popularity of Zoom. The pandemic also saw the rise of Chromebooks and people had the need for affordable laptops for online classes, meetings, etc. A report by 9to5Google reveals that the Zoom app for Chromebooks will soon be shutting down.

When is the Zoom app for Chromebooks shutting down?

Those who use the Zoom app on Chromebooks are seeing this message, “This app will no longer be officially supported after August 2022. Please use the new Zoom for Chrome PWA to join meetings on ChromeOS.” So after August, the Zoom app will cease to exist on ChromeOS.
Why is Zoom shutting the app on Chromebooks?
The report says that while the app has been around for a few years, the functionality has been very limited. Also, the app hasn’t got significant updates for a while now. A key reason why the app won’t work on Chromebooks is that it is an older app. Google had said in August 2020 that it will phase out Chrome apps and wants developers to have Progressive Web Apps for Chromebooks.
What are Progressive Web Apps?
Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) basically work like websites but provide an app-like experience. Instead of installing apps, these work like regular websites. Google has been promoting PWAs for ChromeOS for a while now and from June 2022, Google is shutting down almost all Chrome apps on ChromeOS — a reason why the Zoom app is down.
How does one Zoom on Chromebooks?
Last year, Zoom introduced its PWA for Chromebooks. It works quite similarly to how Zoom works on macOS. Zoom has been updating the PWA also regularly. Instead of using an app, users will have to use the PWA to log in to Zoom on Chromebooks.
