The Android operating system has been plagued by a variety of outages since Monday (March 22), with users reporting certain apps closing as soon as they’re opened. Google has issued a statement about the problem, while also revealing how users can get their apps back online.

Android smartphone and tablet users reported the problems from around 10pm on Monday.

The outages continued into the morning, with more and more people reporting the issue well into Tuesday afternoon (March 23).

Android is Google’s native operating system, with users regularly downloading new apps via the Google Play Store application.

But the bug appeared to affect all of Google’s related apps, including Gmail and the official Google app, as well as some third-party apps.

A Google statement read: “We have resolved the issue with WebView that caused some apps on Android to crash for some users.

“Updating Android System WebView and Google Chrome via Google Play should now resolve the issue.”

The official @Gmail Twitter account has also advised users to clear their cache for the app.

Android users can clear their cache by heading to ‘Settings’, then ‘Applications’, ‘Gmail’, ‘Storage’, and then ‘Clear Cache’.

Android tablets are also affected by the Google app outage, which has plagued smartphones across the UK.

The issues were related to an underlying system called ‘Android System WebView’, which allows Android apps to display Google web content.

The apps will likely continue to crash whether you uninstall them, and re-download them, or not.

The best way to resolve the issue is to update Android System WebView and Google Chrome.
